The last one-store business in The Grocer’s Top 50 ranking of the UK’s biggest independent grocery retailers, has opened a second store.

Stans Superstore opened the 3,000 sq ft forecourt store last week in Llangollen, Clwyd, under the Nisa Local fascia, creating 27 jobs.

The store has a full grocery offer, as well as food to go, non-food, café, petrol station and parking. It is the first time in nearly 10 years that Llangollen has had a petrol station.

Stans started looking for a second site in January 2009 after four multiples, including Morrisons and Tesco, opened close to its supermarket in the Shropshire village of St Martin.

It secured the Llangollen site in October 2009 - a car showroom and filling station that had stood disused for nine years. In April 2010, developers submitted plans for a 20,000 sq ft supermarket on the other side of the town. Last week, it was confirmed that a Sainsbury’s store would be built.

However, Stans decided to push on with its plans and secured the forecourt store in February last year following lengthy negotiations.

“We’re really glad we’ve finally opened,” said Stans Superstore partner Andrew Faulks. “We’ve only been open a week but the store has exceeded all our expectations.”

Faulks added that the store would also stock local produce - a unique selling point of its St Martin superstore.

Stans Superstore is ranked number 47 on the Top 50, with sales of £16m, down 7%, last year.
