Sushi Daily is recalling a batch of its Sushigari, which it sells in jars at its kiosks in Waitrose and Sainsbury’s because of risk of contamination with small pieces of glass.
The Sushigari (ginger), which the Food Standards Agency said presented a safety risk, was from batch code 18081 with a best before date of 2 June this year.
How can companies protect themselves against recalls?
No other Sushi Daily products apart from the Sushigari in 140g jars were known to be affected, the FSA said.
Sushi Daily, owned by KellyDeli, has 70 Sushi Daily counters in Waitrose and eight in Sainsbury’s. Sainsbury’s 38 other sushi counters are run by Sushi Gourmet and are not affected.
Point of sale notices have been displayed in all shops selling the product. Customers have been advised to return any jars to the store where they bought it for a full refund, or to phone the Sushi Daily helpline.which is 0203 006 7896.
Sainsbury’s notice says: “As a precautionary measure we are asking customers who have purchased this product not to consume it but return it to their nearest Sainsbury’s store, where they will receive a full refund.”
The Sainsbury’s notice refers to “small pieces of glass”. Waitrose is less specific and mentions the risk of “a foreign body”.
Sushi Daily operates more than 600 fully serviced sushi kiosks across Europe, mostly in and outside of grocery stores, supermarkets, airports and train stations.
It first came to the UK in 2015, followed by Sweden, Portugal and Denmark.
