Transylvanian ‘chimney cakes’ are coming to the UK, courtesy of German supplier Sweet Horn.
The snacking pastries range, which comprises baked bread dough wrapped around a sweet or savoury filling, comes in two sweet flavours: classic - a hollow bread tube topped with caramelised sugar (rsp:£1.09) and dessert, filled with cheesecake (rsp: £1.59), along with two savoury filled variants - bratdog or hotdog (rsp: £1.69). They can be reheated from frozen in the packaging in 30 seconds in the microwave.
Based on a 300-year-old recipe and sold under the strapline ‘Love at first bite’, chimney cakes come as shelf-ready singles to target the convenience and impulse market, with a multipack being developed. They have a shelf life of six months frozen or two to three days once defrosted.
Producer Sweet Horn, which has invested over €6m in a site in Geilenkirchen in Germany, plans to open a UK office to support the brand and bring out a range of complementary sweet and savoury dips.
Sweet Horn has won its first UK distribution with Leathams and is currently in talks with several major retailers.
