Tesco stores in Scotland are to be hit by a three-day strike over the bank holiday weekend.
Nearly 150 drivers from its Livingston distribution centre that serves all Scotland stores will walk out from Thursday 24 to Saturday 26 May.
The T&G union is disputing changes to terms and conditions and the ‘derecognition’ of the union when the distribution centre moves to a new site 500 yards down the road.
“We are naturally disappointed by this decision,” a spokesman for Tesco said.
“Put simply, all we are doing is changing the way we pay our existing staff - not what we pay them,” he added.
Meanwhile, a Tesco shareholder has gained enough support to propose a resolution at Tesco’s annual general meeting next month calling for the retailer to adopt higher standards in its dealings with suppliers and farmers in low-wage countries.
Ben Birnberg, secretary of campaign group War on Want, said he needed the support of at least 100 investors with at least 2,000 shares each but has “got six times that”.
“I’d like to see all our corporate retailers taking their ethical responsibilities seriously,” he told the Daily Telegraph. “It’s not anti-Tesco.”
