Tesco plans to open one of its biggest distribution centres in the UK next year to cope with its increasing growth.
A spokesman for Tesco said the £65m development in Goole, near Hull, would provide extra capacity and was not being built to replace existing depots - unlike the super-depot in Livingston, Scotland, to open next year to rationalise smaller sites (The Grocer, 15 April, p6).
A planning application for the 850,000 sq ft depot, which will require 1,000 staff, has been submitted. Site developer Sterling St James is confident that work will start in the new year, with it opening by the year end.
Tesco has not yet decided whether the depot will serve food or non food distribution, but it would be likely to supply stores from the Midlands to the Scottish border. It will form part of the £237.5m Centrepoint business park development.
