The space race is not over for Tesco after all, with the supermarket giant today sending a Samsung Galaxy S6 to the edge of the earth’s atmosphere to celebrate the new phone’s launch in store.
Tesco Mobile said it had decided on entering a ‘new frontier’ to give an extra lift off to its marketing.
The phone was launched on a space balloon from a secret location in the Peak District today (10 April) and the journey to the edge of space took over 2 hours, with the handset climbing to an altitude of 32.5 km and surviving aggressive jet stream winds of over 100mph and temperatures that plummeted to -57 degrees Celsius in the process.
Tesco Mobile’s YouTube channel today gives viewers a chance to see the will see the smartphone’s journey, filmed by three GoPro cameras attached to the payload. It has been running a competition with the person to tweet “DROP” with “#S6EdgeOfSpace” closest to the moment that the balloon bursts sending the device returning back to Earth winning one of the phones.
Users will be asked to tweet ‘LAND’ along with the same hashtag to guess when the phone will land to be in with a chance of winning a Samsung S6 edge.
Updates on #S6EdgeOfSpace are being posted on Tesco Mobile’s Facebook page and on the network’s Twitter account @tescomobile.
