Tesco is to scrap all baby wipes containing plastic from mid-March.
The supermarket is the UK’s biggest seller of baby wipes, selling more than 75 million packs, or 4.8 billion individual products, a year.
It stopped using plastic in its own-label products two years ago, but from 14 March the entire range will become plastic-free.
It means all but one branded and own-label wipe in Tesco’s UK stores are now plastic-free. The remaining pet wipe product will be plastic-free by the end of the year.
Last week Tesco announced it had removed more than one and a half billion pieces of plastic from its UK business since it launched its strategy to remove it from packaging.
“We have worked hard to remove plastic from our wipes as we know how long they take to break down,” said Tesco group quality director Sarah Bradbury.
“There is no need for wet wipes to contain plastic, so from now on we will no longer stock them if they do.”
