Tesco’s staff, customers and suppliers have raised a record-breaking £11.9m for Cancer Research.

The total beats the £10m target set in March 2012 when the charity was named Tesco’s Charity of the Year for 2012. The retailer said it was the largest amount ever raised by a business and charity partnership in that time scale.

The campaign included ‘static’ bike rides, treks by Tesco staff and TV-themed competitions, while Tesco and Cancer Research teamed up to place eight million leaflets on store checkouts to raise awareness of the disease.

The money raised will go towards funding 32 research projects into helping make early diagnoses of cancer.

“Thanks to Tesco’s support our scientists can now focus on even more research to find out how we can get cancer diagnosed earlier and help many more people to survive cancer in the future,” said Richard Taylor, Cancer Research UK’s executive director of fundraising and marketing.

Rebecca Shelley, group corporate affairs director at Tesco, said: “I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to all our customers, colleagues and suppliers who have contributed towards such an amazing year of fundraising activity for Cancer Research UK.

“Your effort and generosity has been truly inspirational and just goes to show how Tesco can use its scale for good to help communities across the UK.”

The Tesco Charity Trust tops up money raised by staff by 20%, up to a maximum of £500,000.

Tesco has also formed a partnership with Diabetes UK. Last weekend, children who visited Tesco stores around the UK were invited to take part in fruit-themed games and activities to raise money for the charity and boost awareness of healthy eating.

Paul Amadi, director of fundraising for Diabetes UK, said: “The money raised will go towards supporting the 3.8 million people with diabetes and help people at high risk of Type 2 diabetes reduce their risk of the condition.”
