Tesco’s UK & ROI CEO Jason Tarry has been appointed president of the Institute of Grocery Distribution.
Tarry is set to take over from current president, and former Greencore CEO, Patrick Coveney on 1 January 2023.
The Tesco lifer is already an active member of IGD’s Policy Issues Council. The group’s CEO Susan Barratt said she was “delighted to welcome” him as president.
“With more than 30 years’ experience at the UK’s largest supermarket, Jason is a highly respected leader bringing a wealth of invaluable experience to the role,” she said.
“His mix of international experience, plus the leadership he demonstrated during the pandemic, make him superbly placed to help IGD in our unique role of uniting, mobilising and inspiring the food and consumer goods industry around critical social, economic and business issues.”
Tarry has been UK & ROI CEO at Tesco since July 2018. During his three-decade long career at the retailer, he has held several senior positions including CEO for clothing and chief product officer.
“I’m honoured to become president of IGD, an organisation that plays an important role in bringing together our industry to deliver progressive change,” he said.
“I look forward to working alongside IGD and its members to continue to make a positive impact in the industry and support our customers, colleagues and suppliers through this challenging period.”
He succeeds Coveney, who has been IGD president for nearly two years, having joined the group in January 2021. IGD’s presidents are typically appointed on a two-year term basis.
Last year, Coveney left Greencore after being at the helm of the sandwich and salads supplier since 2008 to become CEO of foodservice giant SSP.
