Tesco has listed a giant onion six times the size of a standard onion.
The Giant Onion weighs about 850g and will go on sale in Tesco stores at £1 a pop this week. It is grown in San Clemente in Spain and supplied to Tesco by onion supplier Stourgarden.
Stourgarden said the Giant Onion had a milder taste than standard onions, and had a single centre as opposed to the multicentre typical of British hybrid varieties. “This makes them an excellent choice for a multitude of dishes, from salads to onion rings,” added MD Bill Rix.
At roughly six times the size of a standard onion, the Giant Onion “offers both convenience together with reduced waste for the user”, Stourgarden said, adding the onions were hand-harvested to minimise damage through bruising.
Tesco onion buyer Emma Williams said the retailer was always looking for new ways to “excite and inspire” consumers, and the Giant Onion fitted the bill perfectly. “New product developments alongside changes in the look and feel of the fixture are helping to inspire consumers and educate them on the offer and the various uses.”
