Hit TV comedy The Big Bang Theory has been a big hit in supermarkets and is poised to get bigger still thanks to a raft of new licensing deals.
Pyramid International is rolling out a range of stationery inspired by the show, kicking off with A5 notepads featuring catchphrases such as ‘Bazinga’ and to be expanded next year. Asda, meanwhile, is set to launch a range of Big Bang Theory clothing, and already carries boardgame The Big Bang Theory Party Game on the Asda Direct website.
The big four supermarkets also sell the show on DVD and Blu-ray.
The Big Bang Theory, which launched in 2007 and follows the adventures of four geeky scientists, was described as one of the fastest-growing licensed properties by Pyramid International licensing director Mordy Benaiah.
“It has sort of crept up on us - it is not obvious like the A-list films we deal with,” he added.
Pyramid, which has worked with The Big Bang Theory owner Warner for 10 years, extended its product line-up beyond posters following the decline of specialist music shops.
“The decline of record retail forced us to look at our product offering and explore ways we can range our lines within supermarket chains,” said Benaiah. “Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons play an important part of what we are doing today and are a significant part of our turnover.”
Recent activity has included the launch of an exclusive Asda range based on Warner Bros’ movie Man of Steel, and exclusive DC Comics stationery for Tesco.
