Toothpaste tablet maker Pärla is closing in on a £400k crowdfunding target as it looks to launch an improved suite of “game-changing” new products in oral care.

Pärla was founded by three dentists as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional toothpaste. The tablets are entirely plastic-free and can be chewed until they turn creamy before a toothbrush is used as normal.

Pärla has so far raised over £350k of a £400k target, with the company valued at £4m.

“In a world where every toothpaste tube you have ever used still exists, Pärla is on a mission to eradicate plastic from oral care,” said Simon Chard, co-founder and CEO.

The money will be used to help Pärla “solidify its position as the leading challenger brand in oral care”, said the business, with the funds going towards “game-changing” new packaging [and] product developments, expanded brand awareness, and expanding into new markets.

The company’s stated goal is to convert 5% of the UK population to using Pärla, an ambition that would equate to over £90m in revenue. It has so far sold products worth £2.7m since launching in 2021.

Its products are primarily sold online, where it has more than 38,000 customers in over 20 countries, as well as in 2,000 stores around the UK including Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, and Boots.

Pärla has appeared on Dragons’ Den, in Sainsbury’s Future Brands programme, and in Whole Foods Market’s Next Big Thing.

An estimated 20 billion tubes of toothpaste go to landfill each year, according to Colgate, while 200 million brushes are thrown away each year in the UK alone.
