Richard Greenhalgh, the former Unilever UK executive chairman, is to lead the board of First Milk, one of Britain’s largest farmer-owned dairy co-operatives.
Greenhalgh retired as the chairman of Unilever UK in July after 30 years with the company and will assume the position of First Milk chairman at its board meeting on November 15.
Roger Evans, the outgoing chairman, will step down at the board meeting, although he will remain as a farmer representative on the board for a further three years.
He said: “The dairy industry continues to navigate its way through a period of sustained
change and development, and it is essential for our future success and sustainability that we have the right mix of proven commercial skills and experience leading the business.
“In appointing Richard, we have secured the expertise of an individual with a strong and proven track record.”
Greenhalgh added that although the challenges within the UK dairy sector have been well documented, he is excited about leading the necessary changes within the industry.
He said: “I am looking forward to working with the First Milk board and pushing forward the strategic business objectives.”
First Milk claims to have more than 3,600 dairy farmer members who produce approximately 18% of the UK’s total milk production.
