Dove has become the latest big brand to shrink in the face soaring costs.
The Unilever brand’s 100g Beauty Bars have been replaced with smaller 90g bars in the supermarkets – but prices have stayed the same or risen.
At the time of writing, Tesco was selling the new 6x90g multipacks at the same price of £2.50.
In Asda, the old 2x100g packs have been swapped for 2x90g packs at a higher price – rising from £1 to £1.15.
Morrisons, meanwhile, was selling multipacks of two and six containing the new 90g format (rsp: £1.50-£4) at the same price as the old 100g bars [Assosia 12 w/e 1 August 2022].
A spokeswoman for Dove owner Unilever said the fmcg giant was “currently experiencing increases in the costs of some of the raw materials that go into our Dove beauty bar”.
“When this happens, we will always try to mitigate cost increases as best we can while continuing to maintain high-quality ingredients.
In this instance, Unilever had reduced the size of the product “to bring it in line with other markets”, she said.
“The retail price of our products is always at the sole discretion of the retailer and we, like all manufacturers, only provide a recommended retail price.”
The Grocer has approached the supermarkets for comment.
It comes after The Grocer last month revealed Unilever had shrunk its Magnum multipacks in a bid to mitigate soaring costs.
