frushi

Waitrose has launched a new type of sushi made with fruit instead of seafood.

The retailer said it was the first supermarket in the UK to sell ‘frushi’, with packs hitting its shelves this week.

The new variant is made with fruit centres wrapped in sushi rice and then coated with desiccated coconut.

Packs are now on sale for a price of £2.35 in 270 out of its 346 branches. Each pack includes two rolls made with melon, pineapple and mango and two with a mint and mango coulis and blueberry.

“Our customers love to try the latest foodie trends so we’re sure they’ll go tutti frutti over this year’s alternative to sushi,” said Waitrose sushi buyer Shaun Birrell.

“Frushi is a delicious on-the-go snack, a great substitute for dessert, or can even be enjoyed for breakfast.”

More than 1,000 packs per hour of frushi were now being made by manufacturer Taiko exclusively for Waitrose, the retailer said.

Waitrose was the first supermarket to sell sushi in the UK 20 years ago and last year became the first to offer fresh sushi counters in selected branches. It now has five counters, the most recent opening in Solihull last month.
