Charles Wilson is expected to bring his cost-cutting expertise to C&C operator and delivered wholesaler Booker, following his departure from M&S.
Wilson will become chief executive of Booker on November 1, with current chief executive and chairman Hans Kristian Hustad becoming non-executive chairman.
Wilson, who sensationally resigned this week as M&S director of property, IT and supply chain, was regarded as Stuart Rose’s right-hand man having worked alongside the M&S boss for over a decade.
They both worked at Booker when Rose was chief executive
between 1998 and 2000. Wilson was the director responsible for branches, supply chain, strategy and systems before becoming MD in 2000. The pair joined Arcadia shortly after. Wilson has been credited with delivering £250m of cost savings since joining M&S 17 months ago, a track record that could suit Booker, said one wholesale industry insider.
“With so much duty on cigarettes and diminishing margins on mobile phone top-ups, which wholesalers have relied on, there has never been more need for cost-saving measures,” he said.
Another senior wholesale figure said that Wilson had earned a reputation as a smart operator when last at Booker. “He obviously feels that there is money to be made, which must be good news for the whole industry,” he claimed.
Jez Maiden will join Northern Foods as finance director on September 5. He is currently group finance director of British Vita. Prior to that he was director of finance of Britannia Building Society and group finance director of Hickson International.
Kitchen Range Foods has appointed Matt Godbold to its commercial team as marketing manager. He will be responsible for developing the sweet and savoury snacking business through marketing and NPD. Godbold previously worked at Premier Foods in category management and brand marketing.
Karen Galloway has been appointed as the new market insight manager for the Sea Fish Industry Authority (Seafish). She has experience in category management for the multiple retail sector at Nestlé Rowntree, Scottish Courage and A McLelland.
