Mashed potato and caterpillar are among the weird and wacky flavours in Nestlé Rowntree's new Wonka Oompas sweets the first kids' sugar confectionery product to combine savoury and sweet flavours.
Based on the Oompaloompa characters from the Roald Dahl book, these wild card' variants (caterpillar is actually cucumber) are said to offer kids an unexpected taste challenge. The other flavours are jam doughnut, rhubarb and custard, popcorn and snozzberry.
The launch, on June 4, will be backed by a dedicated four week TV ad campaign due to air on July 16. It also features on a new Loompaland site within the Wonka web site. Samples will be distributed through the Nestlé Birthday Club and children's magazine. Rsp: 29p.
The Wonka umbrella now encompasses eight products. Sales communications manager Graham Walker said awareness of the Wonka character among children was very high: "They're all especially designed with pocket money purchase in mind."
