The royal family have had a busy year of weddings and heir production, so it’s nice to see one of them getting back to the day job.
Sophie, Countess of Wessex, was last week unsurprisingly deemed the best person for the job of judging the winner of the Countess of Wessex Cup at Sandhurst. The event is a sort of It’s a Knockout for the armed forces, with events including a dragon boat time trial, a stretcher race and a command task. What larks!
But useful, practical skills are put to the test, too - as was proved by the event’s most important moment, the cake-making competition. After some deliberation, Her Royal Wessexness selected Royal Air Force Wittering’s entry, with its iced red, white and blue roundel, as the winner.
Well done, squad! Next year we’d like to see more food-based rounds: toasting marshmallows with jet engines, peeling spuds with bayonets and fishing off the back of a Navy destroyer, please.
