It’s the barbecue season. And that puts meat high on the agenda for many families.
For our analysis of meat, we are looking only at prime cuts such as sirloin, rump steak, pork or lamb with a value of £6 or more per kilo.
There is a relatively small range on offer within any of the stores.
Overall there is an average of just 19 SKUs, with the broadest range being in Sainsbury, by a short head, closely followed by Asda and Safeway. From our research, if shoppers want to find a good deal to cook on the barbecue, the place to go is Sainsbury, with 24% of its range sold under some kind of offer.
Unfortunately, 34% of the product under offer was also out of stock, or very likely to become so.
Better, perhaps, to go to Tesco or Morrisons, where the percentage of product on offer was 11% and 13% respectively, and the out of stocks scenario was better at 10% and 17% respectively. In terms of special offers, the place not to go is Asda, where 60% of a much more limited range of marked offers were unavailable or expected to be out of stock.
In terms of excellent performance with the availability, look no further than Safeway and Somerfield, where we found zero out of stocks on product under offer. These two multiples did not have many skus on offer, but were managing the ones they did well.
Outside of the special offer menu, availability was considerably better across the board when it came to prime cuts of meat.
The worst performer in this regard was Tesco, with 15% out of stock, slightly worse than its overall average.
The best was Morrisons at 0%, followed by Somerfield at 4% and Sainsbury at 7%.
In general, however, the 9% average this time for out of stocks across the fascias for normal product was better than the 12% average across all audited categories in our studies to date.
