David Howorth, supply chain director at General Mills UK, on cricket, the world’s finest ice cream and careful handling of hot metal


What was your first ever job? A summer job as a lathe operator before I started my A-levels.

You've got 25 words to describe your career to date. Sainsbury's retail management, warehousing and local distribution with Wilkinson Sword, third party distribution at PepsiCo, national distribution with Häagen-Dazs and Grand Met, and European logistics with General Mills.

How do you describe your job to your mates? I move boxes.

What is the worst job you've ever had? A lathe operator.

If you could change one thing in the grocery industry, what would it be? To develop high levels of trust between trading partners.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? Seeing and helping people to grow and develop within a business.

What is the least rewarding part? The commute.

If you didn't work in grocery where would you work? On a cricket field.

What's your best interview tip? Be sincere.

What was your worst job interview? An interview in central London when I was 17 years old. I missed my train, arrived there late and went shopping instead: broke and with no job.

Where do you hope to be in five years time? Still working for General Mills.

What would be your dream perk? A box at Hillsborough (the home of Sheffield Wednesday).

What is your motto in life? The best achievements are those that you have to work the hardest for.

What do you like to do outside of work? Playing and coaching cricket and coaching and supporting football.

What was the first music single you bought? T.Rex Telegram Sam

What did you want to be when you were a kid? A farmer.

What's your favourite movie? The Full Monty - a classic British bittersweet film.

What has been the most embarrassing moment in your life? Another summer job, this time in a foundry. A piece of hot metal caught me in a very delicate place and I had to be treated by a nurse. The embarrassing bit was that she was very attractive.

What would you request as your final meal? It wouldn't matter as long as it ended with the world's finest ice cream, Häagen-Dazs.

What's the weirdest thing you've eaten? Frogs legs.

What luxury would you have on your desert island? Radio Four longwave (for Test Match Special).
