Store of the week: Asda Great Yarmouth

What impact has the recent in-store management restructure had and did the Black Friday protest take place at your store? Yes, the store is affected and 15 roles are in consultation. My management team have done a great job while the consultation is going on and I’m proud of them. We didn’t have Black Friday here and I have the team to thank for that. I won’t say morale is top but nothing is finalised yet and I try to keep stuff light hearted - we’ve got a day job to do. We laugh a lot, and that doesn’t fix what they’re concerned about but we are a jovial team.

It seems like it’s working. Our shopper was impressed by your store standards and friendly staff. What’s driving these standards? It’s about respect, really. The biggest thing is to treat customers well, and we get the same customers in week in, week out. The colleagues are very knowledgeable. This week Asda is celebrating those colleagues that have over 25 years’ service. We’ve got around 30 colleagues from this store going up by coach to Doncaster racecourse this afternoon for a big bash.

How have sales been over the World Cup so far and what special promotions do you have on? From this week we’re changing to focus on the holiday season - there are a lot of caravans and holiday parks in the area. We’ve had promotions on beer and snacks for the World Cup, with three cases of beer for £20 and Doritos for £1 and dips. They’ve flown out: we’ve seen a 200% uplift on Doritos and 100% uplift on beer. The store has also seen an uplift in clothing over the weekend - 60% in ladies wear.

You have a Sainsbury’s and Tesco nearby. How do you keep an eye on the competition? I don’t see Tesco as a threat. Our competition tends to be around Aldi and Lidl - we have that sort of demographic. I do store visits on Fridays to check on any promotions they’re doing.
