Asda was exclusively cheapest for the lasagne, apples and naan breads

Asda is battling hard to win back its Grocer 33 pricing crown as it claimed a second consecutive victory. The win extends its lead over nearest rival Sainsbury’s to two, having now come in cheapest in seven of the 21 weeks so far this year.

At £66.47, it was £2.59 cheaper than this week’s runner-up, Morrisons, with a basket that was 3.6% cheaper year on year, offering the lowest price for 16 items and exclusively cheapest for seven. These included the braeburn apples, lasagne and Sharwood’s naan breads.

Morrisons was cheapest for 13 products and exclusively so for seven, including the cantaloupe melon and wholemeal baps. It offered savings of £1.25 to Loyalty cardholders thanks to More Card Prices on the BrewDog Blackheart stout and Jacob’s Mini Cheddars.

Members of Tesco’s Clubcard scheme received an instant discount of £3.35, reducing its total to £69.53. This was still £3.06 more expensive than Asda. The UK’s biggest grocer was cheapest for 11 items and exclusively so for five including the Lucozade Energy and egg custard tarts.

Sainsbury’s offered the biggest discounts (£4.45) for loyalty members and saw the most deflation at –4.8% but still only managed to come in fourth. At £70.12, it was £3.65 dearer than Asda. It was, however, exclusively cheapest for the carrots, Heinz spaghetti with Richmond sausages and the Tofoo Co tofu.

Waitrose had offers on 10 items but was the only retailer to see inflation on our basket. It was 4.5% more expensive than November 2023 and 6.9% more than last month. This helped to explain how it came in £15.03 more expensive than Asda at £81.50. It was cheapest for just three products, though two – the ginger and the Blue Dragon stir-fry sauce – were exclusively cheapest.
