How was trading over the Easter weekend? Very steady. We have lots of local competition but we traded well and I was very pleased. We had lots of in-store activities too. We had colleagues dressed up as bunnies and an Easter egg hunt.
And did you have lots of eggs left over? We were in a very good position to offer customers eggs right up until we closed on Saturday.
How do you encourage good service? I joined the store five months ago and have focused on delivering fantastic service. We always try to make sure we show our customers how we are different and why they should shop with us rather than our competitors.
Do you offer any specific training? We have just relaunched our customer service training, but we always make sure we communicate to colleagues about customer service. We have big huddles every two weeks where we talk about it.
And what work do you do on availability? Availability is so important for the customer, so we do a lot of work on making sure we have no out of stocks and that the store is fully stocked over the 24-hour period. We want to make sure the product is always on shelf for customers, so it’s all about having full replenishment from the night shift and carrying that through during the day.
What plans do you have for the store over the next few months? I’m going to focus on colleague development. I have 11 colleagues who are currently working towards becoming team leaders. One of the things I love most about my job is identifying talent in a colleague and working with them over a number of years. Sainsbury’s is a great company for promoting from within.
And what was your team’s reaction to the news of the win? They were delighted. We had a big huddle this morning of 40-50 colleagues. The team did a fantastic job during a really busy period.
