Strong availability of green products helped Sainsbury’s triumph in our special green Grocer 33 this week. Its well-laid out Macclesfield store did not have a single out-of-stock product and impressed with its “super” staff despite a few points being lost at checkout, where there was a small queue and the cashier did not offer a bag for life or help with packing.
At second-placed Waitrose Lymington, aisles were wide and well-lit but flowers “looked past their best.” Staff helped find the organic veg, but other items were easy to locate. The checkout assistant was “quick and efficient” but failed to greet our shopper.
Tesco and Asda were joint third, with Morrisons just one point behind. At Tesco Bristol, none of the team members asked if they could help with anything further and there was a long checkout queue. There was a good range of services available, but the lack of organic produce was “disappointing.”
There were two entrances/exits at Asda Clayton Green - both of which were “narrow” - but once in store there was plenty of space. A member of staff restocking pushed our shopper out of the way to reach the top shelf and didn’t apologise. The layout wasn’t always logical but the checkout experience was one of the best.
Morrisons Workington scored the lowest for availability this week with six not-stocked and two out-of-stock products. But the store was clean and tidy, and staff were “excellent.” There was a small queue at the checkout but the assistant was “chatty” and offered to help.
