This must be a welcome morale booster. How has the big restructuring taking place at Asda affected your store? Although our 12 department managers have now been reduced to six section managers, the morale among staff has remained high. This is down to great communication and transparency during the restructuring. We’ve also promoted two managers to trading managers and will gain six section leader roles, which means that overall we’re actually going to gain in leadership coverage.
You have a lot of experienced staff at the store. Is that a factor in your success? Yes, absolutely. Most have worked at this store for longer than five years. Not only do we celebrate long-term service to the company, but we also learn from our colleagues as well. Every morning we have a team huddle, which gives us a chance to reward staff.
What are your main focuses in-store at the moment? Click & collect is working really well and it’s been incredibly popular - since March, the number of people using it has increased 10-fold. On Fridays and Saturdays the lockers are almost at full capacity, whereas during the week they’re not completely utilised - this is something we’re working on.
How has Ramadan and the upcoming Eid celebrations affected your store? We’ve experienced greater sales of items associated with Eid celebrations such as watermelons and onions - around 4% over the Ramadan period. Our demographic is mixed, being located just a mile away from Bradford.
You must be loving the hot weather. What are the big sellers currently? Outdoor furniture, tents and BBQs. Our general merchandise has increased by 10% over the past month and that’s being driven by these outdoor items. We’ve set up an area outside the store with fake grass, swings, trampolines and furniture so people get a sense of what we’re selling before they even enter the store
