tesco receipt money

Tesco bagged its first Grocer 33 pricing win since mid-September, helped by deals on almost half the items on our Halloween-themed shopping list.

The UK’s biggest grocer came in £1.11 cheaper than runner-up Morrisons at £77.99. This was after factoring in £5.33 of discounts for its loyalty scheme members via its Clubcard Prices promotions. Tesco was carrying 15 deals, all of which were limited to shoppers with a Clubcard. Nine of the promos were straight discounts while six were multibuys. This helped Tesco offer the lowest price for 14 items, of which three were exclusively cheapest. These were the Mr Kipling Fiendish Fancies, Quorn Ham Free Slices and the Robinsons squash.

Morrisons shoppers saved a total of £5.50 through its deals this week. Of this, £2 was only available to those with a More Card. It was cheapest for 15 items and exclusively so for five. These included the pumpkins for carving, smoked salmon and the Staropramen pilsner.

While four of our five retailers were basically flat in terms of year-on-year Inflation, our shopping list at Asda was 5.3% more expensive than in October 2023. The Leeds-based retailer came in £1.20 more expensive than Tesco at £79.19. It was cheapest for 15 items and exclusively so for six, including the Cravendale milk, sausagemeat and Vita Coco coconut water.

There was just £1.35 separating the traditional big four supermarkets as Sainsbury’s came in at £79.34. It was giving Nectar members a £5.50 discount based on eight member-only deals. It was also carrying four multibuys. It was exclusively cheapest for six products including the Haribo mini bags and the single cream.

Waitrose was exclusively cheapest for the Cadbury hot chocolate. Its competitiveness stopped there – it was £13.87 dearer than Tesco at £91.86.
