To mark its 70th anniversary, Walkers has unveiled an unusually sincere advert with the express purpose of saying ‘thank you’ to the Great British public.
Narrated by Gary Lineker, the ad begins with a recreation of Henry Walker’s Leicester shop in 1948, and whizzes us through the nation’s crisp-chomping history ever since. The stylised depictions of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s are familiar and occasionally amusing, with Brits’ insistence on eating outside even in unpleasant weather affectionately parodied.
But, weirdly enough, the (rarely documented) crisp packaging itself is more interesting than the clothes and sets - viewers will be able to date themselves by the oldest bag they recognise.
