Andrew Newlands
Managing director, The Monty Bojangles Company, on Sweet Dreams, Sideways and Swiss surrealism
What was your first-ever job? I worked as a barman in an independent alternative music venue in Croydon.
What’s been your worst job interview? I had an interview with Ikea, which involved a day of teamwork games, something I tried to take charge of. I don’t think my pink and blue hair extensions and facial piercings (since removed) helped my application!
What was the first music single you bought? Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by Marilyn Manson.
How do you describe your job to your mates? I explain that my focus in the confectionery world is varied and invariably passion-fuelled!
What is the most rewarding part of your job? The constant sensation of speed, the tangible electric current of ideas, and working with the brightest people I know.
What is the least rewarding part? Parking in my parking space - a daily negotiation with the courier van.
What is your motto in life? Put 100% into everything you do. If you fail, at least it wasn’t because you didn’t try your hardest.
If you were allowed one dream perk, what would it be? Better parking at Monty Bojangles.
Do you have any phobias? No, nothing pathological.
If you could change one thing in grocery, what would it be? The steady march of price priority over quality.
What luxury would you have on a desert island? A solar-powered water purifier.
What animal most reflects your personality? The elusive tiger dolphin.
What’s your favourite film and why? Sideways. Paul Giamatti and co are fantastic, the characters are delightfully flawed and the film is beautifully shot. I am particularly fond of the wine-growing theme as it reminds me of past unforgettable wine tours with friends.
What was the most embarrassing moment in your life? They are locked in the vault. If I find the key I’ll let you know.
Which celebrity would you most like to work with and why? HR Giger [Swiss surrealist artist]. When I was young I drew and painted constantly. I have an ambition to return to my paint box one day.
