Tesco is facing an outraged community in Inverness over plans to build a fourth store.
Residents in the Scottish ‘Tesco Town’ have clubbed together to launch an anti-Tesco website in order to add names to a 1,000-strong petition.
The Inverness store would give Tesco a market share of 56% in the Inverness postcode, according to analyst CACI (The Grocer, January 21, p8).
MSPs and community groups have said it would destroy the scenery of the area and are calling for the city to apply for World Heritage Status.
MSP Fergus Ewing said: “Inverness needs a fourth Tesco store like Imelda Marcos needs another pair of shoes.”
A Tesco spokesman said the protesters did not necessarily represent the view of the whole community. “We’ve consulted widely with the public and we know there are mixed views and lots of questions.”
The move comes as Asda bids to open its most northerly store, in the Highlands, 10 miles from where Tesco has put in an another application in Wick.
Asda has put in an outline application for a 31,000 sq ft store in Thurso, but said that Inverness remained its priority.
Asda has laid down a challenge to Tesco for supremacy in the Northern Ireland grocery sector after chief executive Andy Bond revealed a plan to take the number of stores to 20 in the next two years. Asda currently operates 13 former Safeway stores in the province. Tesco has 33 supermarkets in Northern Ireland.
Landmark Wholesale’s sales grew 3.5% in December, which helped grow its total sales for the year by 8%. Wine was up 17.7%, while sales of beer were up 14.4% and cider 13.8%. Pet food rose 11%.
Asda.com is trying to lure lapsed customers to place an order with a £10 discount on any orders of £50 or more.
Ocado was offering £20 off orders of £100 to woo back its customers last week.
The Co-operative Group posted a like-for-like sales increase of 2% for the five weeks to December 31. Sales were boosted by strong performance alcohol, confectionery and fresh. Total sales in the peak week were £7m higher than the previous year, with the help of an extra day’s trading and promotions.
TRS Wholesale has withdrawn MDH Sambar Masala from sale after it was found to be contaminated with the illegal food dye Sudan 1. The affected product is MDH Sambar Masala 100g with a best before date of April 2007, lot number 01.
Southern Co-operatives has begun its £2m investment programme on the Isle of Wight with the rebranding of the first of the eight David’s Stores on the island. The first rebranded store is in Carisbrooke, Newport.
