Up to 250 workers could lose their jobs as a result of a decision by Asda to close a Northamptonshire distribution centre and open a larger one 95 miles away.

The retailer's national distribution centre for general merchandise in Corby will close in July, with a new 655,000 sq ft site in Carcroft, South Yorkshire, lined up as a possible replacement.

"Despite an exhaustive search for sites in Corby and the surrounding area, we haven't been able to find one big enough for our future business requirements," an Asda spokesman said.

"With changes in the number, locations and format of our stores, we need a new, dedicated national general merchandise distribution centre.

"We really value the expertise of our colleagues at the Corby depot and we'll work flat out to find new roles in our business."
