Safeway has recruited one of Marks & Spencer's key former executives as commercial director for produce, meat and bakery.
Peter Barton's position represents a new role within the multiple's trading division.
As well as managing trading relationships, Barton will be responsible for further enhancing Safeway's Best in Fresh initiative by working closely to support customer experience in store, particularly on the meat and produce counters. He will report to trading director John Durkan.
Barton worked for Marks and Spencer for more than 20 years and was responsible at a senior level for stores and trading in its food division. He also developed considerable experience in international procurement and managing multi-site operations.
Barton's appointment coincides with Safeway's announcement of plans to pump £3m into its biggest own-label development programme. The strategy will involve its fresh meat offering.
Durkan said: "We are delighted to welcome Peter to the team. His commercial expertise, his store and trading background and his knowledge of a broad range of fresh and prepared products make him a great addition to the trading division as we continue to develop Safeway's commitment to be Best in Fresh."
The Best in Fresh concept was conceived by chief executive Carlos Criado Perez as one of the multiple's four pillars part of its turnaround strategy when he became chief executive in 1999.
