A YouGov report suggests Brits will spend more than £650m on Bonfire Night and Halloween celebrations this year, despite a minority of adults actually participating.
Only 29% of adults will take part in Bonfire Night celebrations, according to the SixthSense report, but they are expected to spend £386m on fireworks, food and drink for parties, and attending organised fireworks displays.
While only 23% of adults plan on participating in Halloween celebrations, just over half agreed that it was a “fun event for kids”. YouGov predicts a spend of £268m this year, on treats, dressing-up and party food and drink. Eight per cent of adults will carve a pumpkin, it added.
“The massive amount of money consumers are already spending on Bonfire Night and Halloween would certainly be enough to make retailers sit up and take notice,” said YouGov SixthSense research director James McCoy. “But the really interesting thing about this report is that the number of people actively taking part is still rather low, and so the big opportunity for retailers is to get the high percentages of people who feel favourably about Bonfire Night and Halloween out celebrating, and of course spending money.”
