British Pig Executive (BPEX) chairman Stewart Houston has been appointed CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to the pig industry.

The North Yorkshire pig farmer is currently a commissioner of the Meat and Livestock Commission, chairman of the National Pig Association and a member of the new Levy Board UK, as well as a number of other organisations.

"I am delighted to have received this award but I believe it is not just for me," said Houston. "This is a recognition of the industry's efforts, which has hauled itself back from the brink."

Others to be honoured include: Lanarkshire dairy farmer and director of the National Dairy Council Alexander Brown; Edmund Harper, chairman of the Road Haulage Association's Livestock Hauliers Group; Andrew Humphries for services to agriculture and the rural economy in Cumbria; and former ploughing champion Douglas Read, who are all appointed MBE.

Patricia Jamieson, Tate & Lyle Sugars Europe director, raw sugar supplies and EU affairs, and Richard Turner, chief executive of the Freight Transport Association, were appointed OBE.
