How did you get to where you are today? I joined PepsiCo in 2005 after six years as part of the marketing team at McVitie's (firstly in the Cake Company and later in the Biscuits division). Following a nine-month stint working on the launch of Walkers Potato Heads, which became the grocery brand launch of the year, my role changed and I lead the health agenda within the Walkers Crisps re-launch in February 2006. I am now enjoying leading the Walkers 'better for you' portfolio.
What is the best decision you have made in your career and why? Moving to PepsiCo
- it has provided me with the opportunities to stretch and grow as a marketer in a culture I love: fast-paced, highly results-driven, combining a strong 'can do' attitude with a supportive cross-functional network.
Who do you most admire in the grocery industry? The founders of Yeo Valley Organic Foods, for the quality of their products and the integrity of their brand, which resulted in Yeo Valley becoming the first organic brand in the top 100 brands.
If you could change one thing in the grocery industry, what would it be? The category mindset - with the ever-changing consumer landscape around today, we need to think more about how to provide cross-category solutions to the consumer and shopper.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? Seeing great ideas come to life and deliver results. I particularly enjoyed working on the Walkers re-launch as it was challenging, but also hugely rewarding - a real demonstration of great teamwork, creative thinking and never-ending team tenacity.
What is the one thing that you could not do your job without? Having great people around me displaying the same passion and enthusiasm as I have for my job.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry today? Choose a company for its people (culture) rather than a role and endeavour to work on brands you feel personally passionate about, as this will fuel your energy and enthusiasm for marketing.
What do you like doing when you are not working? Spending time with my family and friends, walking my dog and enjoying good food and wine!
