Local farm-to-consumer food delivery service Farmdrop has launched its own range of ready meals which it describes as “an industry first”.
The fresh, seasonal Made by Farmdrop ready-to-go dishes are made by hand in a small kitchen near Farmdrop’s Shoreditch, east London headquarters, with fully traceable “farm fresh” ingredients and plastic-free packaging.
The company laments “a major lack of transparency” in the sourcing of ingredients for ready meals and claimed there is a supermarket “double standard” between the welfare of fresh meat compared with meat used as an ingredient.
Fresh ingredients are delivered to the kitchen straight from the farm and once the meals are prepared, they’re packed up with the rest of the customer’s order, ready for delivery.
Farmdrop said Made by Farmdrop recognised the gap on Londoners’ dinner tables for convenient, prepared food and ready meals with fully traceable ingredients.
Every decision taken across its supply chain had been designed to maximise freshness and flavour and eliminate waste, it said.
“Around 70% of Farmdrop’s fresh fruit and vegetables are sourced from the UK. However, just 23% of fresh fruit and veg sold throughout the UK is grown in Britain,” said Made by Farmdrop project manager Grace Niblock.
“We wanted to bring more convenience and a healthy meal delivery alternative to our customers who lack the time to cook on a busy weekday night, but still care about the provenance of their food. What better place to start than with our network of some of the country’s most sustainable food producers.”
The range has launched with two breakfast pots, three salads, seven ready-to-cook meals and side dishes that include vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.
Niblock added: “We’re the first retailer to provide a 100% plastic-free option thanks to using reusable and recyclable glass jars that you can return to your driver, compostable trays, and film made from biodegradable material rather than plastic.”
