Grocery and alcohol were among the most promoted categories in the major supermarkets in the week ending 6 November in both branded and own label products.
Kellogg's, Nestlé and Princes continued to be the most active in the branded grocery chart. Kellogg's had offers in four of the five retailers visited by Assosia. It had price savings on some of its cereals, while x for y promotions were also in use.
Morrisons was the only retailer that did not have a Kellogg's brand on its dedicated promotional space.
Nescafé Gold Blend 200g was the main promoted product for Nestlé, with offers on the coffee in Asda, Sainsbury's and Somerfield, all using the x for y mechanic.
Princes had a variety of products on deal in Asda, Morrisons and Somerfield. It favoured buy-one-get-one-free and x for y offers.
Morrisons was the most heavily promoted retailer when it came to own label grocery. It had a selection of offers on mincemeat, soups, pasta and sauce and Choco Dots.
In alcohol, Smirnoff, Baileys and Foster's were promoting most heavily - not surprising in the run-up to Christmas. Smirnoff vodka one-litre was available in all five retailers with the same offer of two for £25.
Baileys Irish Cream one-litre also used the two for £25 deal in Asda, Morrisons, Somerfield and Tesco, while Sainsbury's had the 70cl size at two for £20.
Foster's was the most active beer brand with offers in Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Somerfield and Tesco on its 440ml cans. Customers could make a saving on the 24-pack in Tesco and Morrisons, while Sainsbury's had an x for y offer on the 18-pack and Somerfield on the 10-pack.
Sainsbury's topped the private label alcohol chart with its Taste The Difference range, with savings on Bavarian Wheat Beer, Cologne Lager, Irish Cream and Vienna Lager. Tesco also had offers on its Finest range including Finest Howcroft Wine and Finest Denman 75cl, using the save mechanic from £7.99 down to £3.99.
