Northern Irish supplier Glens of Antrim Potatoes is targeting new export markets in Great Britain and Europe after opening a new £1.25m factory.
The 21,000 sq ft facility would bring Glens’ whole storage and grading operation under one roof, said director Michael McKillop. It features new packaging machinery that will allow the supplier to produce ‘quad pack’ bags, which sit upright on shelves and make information clearer to read on pack.
The packs will be introduced from this autumn to Glens’ customers - which include Asda, Sainsbury’s Lidl and M&S across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland - and will allow the supplier to communicate which variety of potato works best for particular cooking methods, such as chips, mash or roasted.
“We’re also looking to develop microwaveable products and are planning a new website that will showcase the nutritional benefits of potatoes and recipes,” said McKillop, who added Glens was in discussions with the mults over listings in Great Britain. “The local market is now too small for us so we want to break into the European market and further afield.”
