P&G has become the latest grocery powerhouse to provide relief for Ukranians displaced by the Russian invasion.

The fmcg giant has sent “a multimillion-dollar relief package of cash contributions and P&G products, including diapers, feminine care and other essentials” explained president & CEO Jon Moeller in a letter to employees, published online yesterday (7 March).

The money and goods were “flowing to refugee families through the International Federation of Red Cross & Crescent Societies and relief organisations across central and eastern Europe” he wrote. “We are further expanding these efforts, including the employee matching gift programme.”

P&G products from the likes of its Tampax and Pampers brands played “a role in the daily lives of consumers all around world” Moeller added. “The necessities our products provide are important even in times of crisis – enabling families to address their most basic health and hygiene needs amidst incredibly challenging circumstances.”

Having suspended operations in Ukraine ahead of the invasion by Vladimir Putin’s forces, P&G has now discontinued all new capital investments in Russia and suspended all media, advertising and promotional activity.

It was also “significantly reducing our product portfolio to focus on basic health, hygiene and personal care items needed by the many Russian families who depend on them in their daily lives” Moeller wrote to colleagues. “As we proceed with the reduced scale of our Russian operations, we will continue to adjust as necessary.”

His letter yesterday came as Asda announced it was sending a £1m package to support displaced Ukrainians across Europe. The supermarket, through its Asda Foundation, said it was providing immediate support for families forced to leave their homes as a result of the war, as well as long-term support for Ukrainian refugees who arrive in the UK.
