Tops Supermarket in Hong Kong has appointed former Safeway director Ian Pye as its new president.
Pye moved to Asia after a 30-year career with Safeway, where he started out as store manager and rose up through the ranks to become a director of the company.
He was responsible for developing and implementing new strategies for innovation, sales and service and also developed an automated sales-based ordering system that was implemented 18 months ahead of schedule.
He said this helped Safeway become the first company to use sales-based ordering for all fresh food products.
For three years, he worked as a regional director and converted 65 Presto superstores and opened 40 new Safeway superstores.
For the past three years Pye has worked with Hong Kong's leading supermarket company, Park n Shop. As MD he achieved record profits in 2002 and introduced enhanced IT into all stores in 2003.
