Safeway is bringing "retailtainment" to its BP forecourt estate as it resumes the roll out of the mini petrol station supermarkets.
It is planning to open 50 new forecourt stores over the next two years, with an extended fresh food offer, instore bakery and hot food like cooked chicken, ribs, pasties and meal deals with drinks to go.
The new look model features a new store-within-a-store beers, wines and spirits section. Impulse aisles have been split to shepherd customers around the shop and ready meals will be on sale at gondola ends. Safeway and BP will open five forecourt stores this year using an updated model which went on trial in St Helen's, Merseyside, in May. Over the next two years they will mainly focus on new sites on the north of England and Scotland.
BP forecourts will feature full car-wash and valeting, parking spaces for shoppers and 24-hour cashpoints.
But there are no plans to refit the 51 existing forecourt stores. A spokeswoman said: "We want to reach 100 in the next two years, then look at refreshing existing sites."
