English strawberries grown under glass for the early market are becoming an increasingly important crop, and, judging by the investment, highly profitable, despite having to compete with imports. Humberside grower Nigel Walter, who counts Morrisons among his customers, is building a three acre glasshouse nursery, while Peter Wensak has become the largest UK producer, growing over 500,000kg of Elsanta and Dar Select in Essex and Norfolk. His fruit is handled by AFI, based in Kent. This week Wensak won the prestigious horticultural ward at the HortExperience show for best overall grower, as well as the soft fruit category. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
