The government moved the late May Bank Holiday to Tuesday, June 4, and created another bank holiday for Jubilee Day on June 3. This may lead to queries from your staff about bank holiday entitlements.
Many employees won't actually be entitled to this double holiday. You can of course give them the day off if you wish, but what counts is what is in their contract of employment.
Unless there is a clause in the contract allowing for changes in holiday entitlements, then you do not have to give them the Monday off although they can take it off as part of their annual allowance.
If you have a contract that requires employees to work on public holidays, then Monday should be treated like any other bank holiday.
If you have any doubts over staff entitlements ring your local ACAS office - it is helpful and knowledgeable on employment matters. Since it is its duty to step in should disputes arise, it takes the view that prevention is the best medicine.
On a positive note, I would urge any retailers aware of street parties in their area, to contact the organiser and offer their services as official supplier to the event.
Think of the soft drink sales.
