Belgian company Vandemoortele claims its new Vitelma mayonnaise offers a low-fat, no cholesterol, dairy and egg-free option.
Rolling out now, initially in Tesco and Morrisons stores, the newcomer is made with rapeseed oil, which is rich in Omega-3, a fatty acid said to be good for the eyes, brain, immune system and heart.
Vitelma also claims to have 60% less fat than regular mayonnaise and is aimed at consumers who are concerned about their cholesterol levels, on a low fat diet or who have milk or egg allergies.
It contains no meat ingredients so it is also suitable for vegetarians and vegans. It retails at 95p for 250ml.
The 104-year-old company, whose operations span 10 European countries, said the new offering could be used in salads, sandwiches, with jacket potatoes or as a dip.
