Damian Soong

What was your first job? At 15 I got a Saturday job at my local bike shop after hanging out there after school every day.

What’s been your worst job interview? At university I interviewed with all the big accountancy firms. I didn’t think they went badly but clearly they did - I didn’t get accepted by any.

What was the first music single you bought? The first CD album was Diamond and Pearls by Prince and the New Power Generation.

How do you describe your job to your mates? “I make plant-based products that are better for you and better for the planet.” They jokingly describe it as a “vegan milkshake business”.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? Seeing first-hand the impact of the Form Feeding Fund at Bansang Hospital in the Gambia. With every product we sell we provide a meal which enables not just nutrition, but access to healthcare.

What is the least rewarding part? I honestly feel it’s the biggest privilege to have a positive impact on people’s lives.

What is your motto in life? Fortune favours the brave.

If you were allowed one dream perk, what would it be? A freshly laundered and made bed every day would be a simple but amazing luxury.

If you could change one thing in grocery, what would it be? Queues at checkouts. The idea of having to queue to give someone your money just seems wrong to me. They’ll disappear soon though with innovations like Amazon Go and Standard Cognition using cameras and AI to automatically charge customers.

What luxury would you have on a desert island? A speedboat.

What animal most reflects your personality? I’m half Chinese and my Chinese zodiac is Dragon. Dragons are supposedly kind, strong, intelligent & independent but can be impatient and short-tempered. That’s a pretty good description of me I think (hope!).

What’s your favourite film? Anything by Christopher Nolan, I love the multilayer and chronology of films like Memento.

Which celebrity would you most like to work with? Keanu Reeves - he has fame, wealth and seems to have chosen a different path with it.
