Name: Max Gowland
Job title: Chief innovation officer
Company: Jeyes
HQ: Cambridge
Number of employees: c. 2,000
What's it like to work for your company? Jeyes is an energised and stimulating company to work for. There is an air of energy and enthusiasm.
Why is it a good employer? Because everyone gets to make a visible contribution to the business. There are no quiet hiding places and we like to see people grow as they gain experience. Jeyes works in a very multi-disciplinary way.
How does the company differ from its rivals? We operate both with branded products and private label. This makes us unique within the household fmcg business. Jeyes also supplies some blue chip companies with high-quality products that we have developed and manufactured.
Is there a definable company culture? Yes. Jeyes thrives on its multidisciplinary character, which spawns employees who understand the business as a whole, rather than 'silo specialists'. The structure is flat, making communication fast.
If the company were a car what would it be and why? An Audi TT perhaps. Jeyes is smaller than many of its rivals but fast and agile. It can turn and change direction much more swiftly than many of its rivals.
What's the training like and what qualifications can I earn? There is induction and continual coaching. Training is specialist in nature and depends on what technical skills are needed to be developed within that department. We also offer cross-functional training on interpersonal competencies.
Are you looking for any people right now and, if so, where? We certainly are. Right now we are building a new brand innovation department at our new Cambridge HQ. In addition, we are also strengthening our R&D team based in our laboratories in Thetford, Norfolk.
How does one go about applying for a job? The best way is to contact our HR department in Cambridge. CVs will be addressed within five working days.
What tips would you offer jobseekers? We want people who are passionate about what they do, have a great attitude and a thirst to learn new things. People who can work across disciplines and who are good communicators are very welcome to apply.
How do I find out more about the company? Our current website, about to be relaunched, is a source of some basic information. For those that may be interested in best practice sharing, then contact me directly and I will set up an exchange.
Is the company working on anything exciting right now that you can tell us about? We have recently formalised a stage-gate process, which is working well. Also, we have introduced a new and company-wide way of running the business called integrated business planning, designed to enhance our cross-functional effectiveness.
