It’s been two years since we remarked on a resurgence in chocolate orange launches. And despite the pandemic shifting plenty of consumer habits in that time, the frenzy over the flavour hasn’t died down. Here are some recent innovations that prove the trend is still going strong
Weetos Orange Chocolatey Hoops
According to Weetos, “choc orange flavours are everywhere you look except in tasty cereals”. The brand is aiming to change this by “bringing this on-trend taste to the category”, in the form of its new Orange Chocolatey Hoops. The cereal, which is high in fibre and HFSS-compliant, launches into Asda in mid-February (rsp: £2.99/420g).
Border Dark Chocolate Orange biscuits and bars
Described as the “biggest move in its 38-year history”, Border Biscuits unveiled a major brand refresh in February alongside a trio of new products. The first of these, which hit Sainsbury’s at the end of the month, are both chocolate orange-flavoured. Dark Chocolate Orange biscuits (rsp: £1.85) and Dark Chocolate Orange bars (rsp: £1.75) will be joined by Dark Chocolate Raspberry biscuits later in the year (rsp: £1.85).
Cadbury Dairy Milk Orange Mini Chocolate Eggs
As part of its 2022 Easter range, Cadbury launched these Dairy Milk mini eggs with an orange-flavoured chocolate centre (rsp: £1/72g). Exclusive to Tesco, the eggs join the likes of Twirl Orange and Orange Giant Buttons in Cadbury’s chocolate offering.
Matchmakers Zingy Orange cookies
First launched in the 1960s, orange-flavoured Matchmakers are far from a new addition to UK shelves. But at the start of 2022 they took on a new form: freshly baked cookies. They are the creation of baked goods supplier Baked by Rich’s, which teamed up with Nestlé for a three-strong range of cookies, each featuring one of the confectionery supplier’s brands. The Matchmakers Zingy Orange variant is available in Asda and Co-op stores (rsp: £1.50/four cookies).
Baker Street Chocolate & Orange Truffles
As part of its festive range in 2021, Baker Street added something a little different to its usual offering of bread and stollen. Its Chocolate & Orange Truffles landed exclusively in Tesco (rsp: £3), with the brand dubbing chocolate orange a “perennially popular” flavour.
Divine Orange Thins and Smooth Milk Chocolate with Orange Crisp
Ethical chocolate maker Divine underwent a brand refresh in October 2021, which saw it revamp its packaging design and recyclability and add a handful of new products. As well as a Smooth Milk Chocolate with Orange Crisp bar (rsp: £2.29), it extended its vegan Thins range with a dark chocolate orange flavour (rsp: £4).
Butterkist Crunchy Orange Chocolate Flavour
In order to tap one of the “top flavour choices” for shoppers, Butterkist launched a Crunchy Orange Chocolate Flavour toffee popcorn in July 2021 (rsp: £1.59/155g). The brand said the “indulgent” chocolate-coated variant bridged the gap between popcorn and confectionery.
Maltesers Orange range
Maltesers made its first foray into the chocolate orange craze in March 2021, when it unveiled an orange flavour for its seasonal Bunnies. The treats were so popular that the brand reported a ‘nationwide shortage’. This was followed in April by Orange Maltesers Biscuits (rsp: £1.49/110g), before Orange Buttons landed in July. The latter was launched in singles, treat bags, share pouches and “more to share” pouches (rsp: 69p-£2.79/32g-189g). “Citrus-crazed Brits will love our brilliant new orange flavour”, said Maltesers at the time.
Yorkie Orange
Nestlé expanded its Yorkie range in May 2021 with a limited edition Orange flavour. It went on sale in stores including Co-op, Morrisons and Tesco in single (rsp: 70p) and duo bars (rsp: 85p).
Mackie’s of Scotland Chocolate Orange & Honeycomb
March saw Mackie’s of Scotland jump on the bandwagon with a Chocolate Orange & Honeycomb ice cream, which went on sale in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Iceland, Co-op and Ocado (rsp: £3.89/litre).
