What was your first job? In the fruit & veg section of the local supermarket, for £2.1433 an hour!
What’s been your worst job interview? I got held up by a fire alarm and was late. At the interview, I was asked in but then thrown out without being able to offer my excuse. I was devastated! Eventually I was given a second chance, but I will never forget that feeling.
What was the first music single you bought? Undercover - Never Let Her Slip Away. It was half price in Woolworths.
How do you describe your job to your mates? That I love experimenting and making things and I want to make brilliant products.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? To see our staff enjoying their work.
What is the least rewarding part? Dealing with systems that are 30 years out of date. Don’t get me started on tax return systems that can’t send email confirmations!
What is your motto? Nothing’s ever as bad as it seems and nothing’s ever as good as it seems.
Do you have any phobias? Allegrophobia. I think my worst job interview is responsible for this - now I am typically way too early for everything.
If you could change one thing in grocery, what would it be? I would like to see less implied provenance by trademark. It’s really poor that a brand name is used to imply source location, when it couldn’t be further from the truth.
What luxury would you have on a desert island? Spotify with my Neon Waltz playlist on it.
What animal most reflects your personality? A dog. Fun, full of energy, and loyal.
What’s your favourite film and why? Snatch. The bookmaker robbery scene is a brilliant farce.
What has been the most embarrassing moment in your life? Recently I went to a lot of trouble to make a gift for someone at the request of a customer, only to find out I had sent it to a namesake!
Which celebrity would you most like to work with? Mark Smith - he created my favourite website Seat61. It must be one of the greatest travel sites out there, all created from a passion for travel.
What would your death row meal be? It would have to be our family Hogmanay dinner. With a Navy-strength gin for the road
