Aldi has made a move into high-protein ice cream, rolling out a two-strong range.

The discounter’s new Kri Kri Super Spoon High Protein Ice Cream provides 24g of protein per 450ml tub – or 5.3g per 100ml. It also sports ‘no added sugar’ and ‘high fibre’ claims on front of pack.

Available in Chocolate Hype and Peanut Butter Load, the NPD was “the ideal dessert for those upping their protein intake this January”, said Aldi.

Aldi’s reduced-calorie Gianni’s Cookie Dough Ice Cream is also high in protein. But this latest launch is the first time the nutrient has been the central selling point of innovation in the discounter’s own label ice cream portfolio.

Priced at £2.25, Kri Kri Super Spoon High Protein Ice Cream “provide[s] a huge 38% saving on the Myprotein ice cream tubs”, said Aldi, based on the brand’s £4 price point in Iceland this week.

However, Myprotein’s three 500ml variants – Vanilla, Chocolate and Salted Caramel – are higher in protein per pack. They provide between 30g and 33g.

MyProtein unveiled its ice cream trio last summer as an Iceland exclusive. “It was [only] a matter of time before we expanded our range to include a sweet, nutritional item to the menu in collaboration with Iceland,” said the brand at the time.

Andrew Staniland, group buying director at Iceland Foods, said: “Following the success of Myprotein’s exclusive range at Iceland, it was time to introduce a nutritional dessert to the range, aimed at bringing delight to our fitness-loving audience.”

Volume sales of ice cream tubs dipped 0.6% in grocery last year – although price increases drove a 7.6% value gain [NIQ 52 w/e 7 September 2024].
