Meat alternative brand This is adding caramelised onion sausages to its lineup.
The plant-based sausages contained pea protein and vegetable fibres “to create a hyper-realistic, delicious meat alternative”, said the brand.
Its newly-created ‘Fat 2.0’ ingredient also features in the product. The olive oil-based fat helped create “the same succulence and bite of meat but without the down sides”, claimed This.
The result was a sausage that was high in protein, a good source of fibre and contained 75% less sat fat than the average pork equivalent, it added.
The NPD will roll into Tesco on 4 April (rsp: £2.95/230g).
As caramelised onion was “one of the nation’s most popular flavoured sausages”, the innovation would encourage “more meat eaters to trial and adopt plant-based food”, said the brand.
This co-founder Andy Shovel said there was “a clear demand for high-quality, hyper-realistic plant-based sausages”.
“The fact that our This Isn’t Pork Sausages have already become one of our bestsellers in such a short time is testament to that.”
The new launch tasted “lush” and was “another great showcase of our Fat 2.0 innovation”, Shovel added.
It will be supported through PR, sampling, social media and advertising.
It comes after the brand last year secured £11m in what it claimed was the largest Series A fundraise for a meat alternative brand in the UK.
At the time, This said it would use the cash to support the rapid growth of the business, expand its R&D capabilities and bring a pipeline of new products to the market.
