Martin Pugh, Safeway's director of marketing operations, has been made marketing director, replacing Karen Bray who is leaving after two years in the post.
Chief executive Carlos Criado-Perez said: "Karen leaves with our thanks for a very significant contribution to our turnaround phase and to the development and implementation of the brand values associated with our format programme. We wish her every success in her future career."
Pugh's key focus will be the operational delivery of Safeway's tactical marketing programme.
Work on building the Safeway brand has been reduced in line with the cut-back in Safeway's store reformatting programme, as the bidding process for the multiple continues. Reporting to Safeway's group marketing and trading director Jack Sinclair, Pugh will represent the marketing team on the group commercial committee and work closely with store operations, supply and trading departments.
Pugh, 34, joined Safeway in July 2002 from Comet, where he was head of marketing.
Before working for Comet he spent five years in sales and marketing roles at Mars, which he joined in 1994.
He began his career in 1990 at Barclays Bank, where he gained experience of corporate and private banking in London and Spain.
